Climate funds - who will pay eco-debt? |
 |
Khadija Sharife: "Africa pays the price for parasitical and free-riding behaviour of carbon emitters, more so when the financial sector hijacks the path towards which developing nations will access climate funding, by using public funds for private investor interests." xxSharife and Patrick Bond: "Should society instead move towards retributive payments for ‘ecological debt’ based on both ‘loss and damage’ accounting (introduced at the UNFCCC COP18 in Doha) and environmental justice, in order that the valuing of nature is limited to fines for damages and then prohibitions on further pollution." SOUTH DURBAN SURVIVAL (continued) |
 |
CCS Visiting Scholar Sarah Bracking: "If an oil carrying ship hits the rocks off the Durban coast where I live it will cause a spill that will create many jobs, to pick up all the dead birds from the beaches up and down the coast. Economists who love capitalism do not see a problem with the consumer as shopping machine, because for them consumption contributes to job creation and economic growth, which they also see as completely problem free positive things. I don't." More

The World Toilet Summit comes to Durban, December 2012 |
 |
Durban’s Water Woes: Climate Chaos, Blue Flags Down, Neoliberal Loos, Fish Kills and Sewage Spills
The commodification of crap and South Africa’s toilet apartheid DURBAN - This week’s World Toilet Summit offers an opportunity to contemplate how we curate our crap. Increasingly the calculus seems to be cash, generating contradictions ranging from local to global scales, across race, gender, generation and geography. Nowhere are they more evident than in the host city, my hometown of Durban. We’ve suffered an 18-year era of neoliberal-nationalist malgovernance including toilet apartheid , in the wake of more than 150 years of colonialism and straight racial-apartheid. More

Who’s to blame for “blood diamond” regulation failure? |

Anglo De Beers put in the frame The Kimberley Certification Process (KP) was ostensibly designed to keep “blood diamonds” off global markets. Not only has it failed to do so, but it is actively promoting the human rights atrocities it pledged to wipe out. More

Powerlessness, thanks to BHP Billiton |
 |
World's largest mining house gets cut-rate power price and huge profits, subsidised by the poor. The Marikana massacre has unveiled a mining-policing conspiracy against striking miners that links Lonmin shareholder Cyril Ramaphosa to Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa via incriminating emails. But this incident pales in comparison to the decades of damage done by malevolent power relations between BHP Billiton and Pretoria officials, relations that now seem to be shifting because of Eskom’s desperation. Questions for the mall-builders |
 |
Shopping centres are a foolish, destructive investment destination
This week, Durban’s International Convention Centre hosts 1300 delegates to a Shopping Centre Congress sponsored by one of South Africa’s most environmentally-destructive financial institutions. (As the country’s second largest coal lender and a proponent of failed carbon trading, also known as the “privatisation of the air”, Nedbank advertises extra aggressively to brainwash us into thinking it’s a “green” bank.) if South Africa can't count its broken taps The 2012 Millennium Development Goals report warns that the 2015 deadline is fast approaching and in order to achieve outstanding goals, governments, the international community, civil society and the private sector need to intensify their contributions. A township movement prepares to 'Occupy' |
 |
Umlazi’s unrest won’t be solved by intimidation
 China Ngubane 2 July 2012
It is a time when local police brutality is a national scandal, with more than 50 extra-judicial executions (including many innocent bystanders) traced to a hit squad operating from the Cato Manor station. It is also a time when service delivery protests forced South African President Jacob Zuma to proclaim the need for ‘radical’ changes at last week’s African National Congress policy conference so as to redress blatant economic injustice – though this appears to be merely career-lengthening rhetoric.
