Monica Fagioli is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at the New School for Social Research (The New School, USA). She holds a MA in Anthropology of Media (SOAS, UK). She has conducted her fieldwork across the US, Kenya, Somaliland and Puntland, for her research highlights the relationship between the Somali diaspora and practices state-building in Somaliland and Puntland (in the north of the former Somalia). Her research focuses on specific programs of state-building implemented by international and local actors as part of what scholars describe as transnational governance in a context like Somalia, often defined as a failed state by international observers. More broadly, she is interested in African forms of political life, global migration issues, history of colonialism and development, and race relations. Beyond the academic work, she has been involved in community media projects in the UK, and in media activism across Kenya and South Africa.
