Latest infrastructure debate: overpopulating SA's White Elephant herd?

The proposed Infrastructure Development Bill aims to fast-track the biggest money-wasting, eco-destructive projects in SA history, and to get this through parliament a strange alliance has emerged between the Minerals-Energy Complex and nationalists of different stripes. South Durban is one of the main sites of infrastructure inveigling, to the tune of R250 billion (before cost escalations).

Can BRICS rebuild collapsing global financial architecture?

In its most recent world public opinion survey, the Pew Research Centre found that only a third of South Africans identified ‘international financial instability’ as a major threat (third highest, after climate change and Chinese economic competition). But we should, because it is myopic to expect BRICS to deliver financial stability, much less developmental or environmental justice.

Private sector corruption unveiled in Durban

Based on research drawing on both Durban business and resource extraction, CCS Visiting Scholar Sarah Bracking explores how corruption is framed by respondents and performed by market actors. New types of corruption have emerged due to the increasing complexity of the public-private boundary and the effects of more liberalized markets.

Transparency initiatives are largely ineffective. What is acceptable behaviour in the private sector; what is a usable foundational morality?
To reduce corruption, Bracking argues, requires that politicians and public sector workers register their private businesses and refrain from related trading; that the state distributes economic opportunity more widely; that political party financing is reformed; and that corporate law is changed to prevent new forms of corruption.

What did Obama bring South Africa? Advice on gaming Africa!

US President Barack Barack Obama’s weekend trip to South Africa may have the desired effect of slowing the geopolitical realignment of Pretoria to the Brazil-India-Russia-China-South Africa (BRICS) axis. That shift to BRICS has not, however, meant deviation from the hosts’ political philosophy, argues Patrick Bond

Ordinary Brazilians foot bill for Sepp Blatter to foot Fifa ball
Over the last fortnight, Brazil’s two million street protesters in 80 cities supporting the Free Fare Movement have declared how fed up they are with making multiple sacrifices to Brazilian neoliberalism as revitalized by one Sepp Blatter, the Swiss emperor of Fifa. We should take the opportunity to prod our own three-year-old memories here. After the giddy month of June-July 2010, our own World Cup hangover still requires maxi-strength aspirins for the crushing pain so many South Africans suffer, underfoot Blatter’s white elephant stadiums and elites-only infrastructure.

Climate funds - who will pay eco-debt?
Khadija Sharife: "Africa pays the price for parasitical and free-riding behaviour of carbon emitters, more so when the financial sector hijacks the path towards which developing nations will access climate funding, by using public funds for private investor interests."
xxSharife and Patrick Bond: "Should society instead move towards retributive payments for ‘ecological debt’ based on both ‘loss and damage’ accounting (introduced at the UNFCCC COP18 in Doha) and environmental justice, in order that the valuing of nature is limited to fines for damages and then prohibitions on further pollution."

SOUTH DURBAN SURVIVAL (continued)
CCS Visiting Scholar Sarah Bracking: If an oil carrying ship hits the rocks off the Durban coast where I live it will cause a spill that will create many jobs, to pick up all the dead birds from the beaches up and down the coast. Economists who love capitalism do not see a problem with the consumer as shopping machine, because for them consumption contributes to job creation and economic growth, which they also see as completely problem free positive things. I don't.

The World Toilet Summit comes to Durban, December 2012

Durban’s Water Woes: Climate Chaos, Blue Flags Down, Neoliberal Loos, Fish Kills and Sewage Spills

The commodification of crap and South Africa’s toilet apartheid
DURBAN - This week’s World Toilet Summit offers an opportunity to contemplate how we curate our crap. Increasingly the calculus seems to be cash, generating contradictions ranging from local to global scales, across race, gender, generation and geography. Nowhere are they more evident than in the host city, my hometown of Durban. We’ve suffered an 18-year era of neoliberal-nationalist malgovernance including toilet apartheid , in the wake of more than 150 years of colonialism and straight racial-apartheid.

Powerlessness, thanks to BHP Billiton
World's largest mining house gets cut-rate power price and huge profits, subsidised by the poor. The Marikana massacre has unveiled a mining-policing conspiracy against striking miners that links Lonmin shareholder Cyril Ramaphosa to Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa via incriminating emails. But this incident pales in comparison to the decades of damage done by malevolent power relations between BHP Billiton and Pretoria officials, relations that now seem to be shifting because of Eskom’s desperation.

MDGs are still 'Maximum Distraction Gimmicks'
if South Africa can't count its broken taps
The 2012 Millennium Development Goals report warns that the 2015 deadline is fast approaching and in order to achieve outstanding goals, governments, the international community, civil society and the private sector need to intensify their contributions. South Africa is far away from meeting the deliverables of the Millennium Development Goals as there are no proper audit processes.

Questions for the mall-builders
Shopping centres are a foolish, destructive investment destination

This week, Durban’s International Convention Centre hosts 1300 delegates to a Shopping Centre Congress sponsored by one of South Africa’s most environmentally-destructive financial institutions. (As the country’s second largest coal lender and a proponent of failed carbon trading, also known as the “privatisation of the air”, Nedbank advertises extra aggressively to brainwash us into thinking it’s a “green” bank.)

A township movement prepares to 'Occupy'
Umlazi’s unrest won’t be solved by intimidation

China Ngubane 2 July 2012

It is a time when local police brutality is a national scandal, with more than 50 extra-judicial executions (including many innocent bystanders) traced to a hit squad operating from the Cato Manor station. It is also a time when service delivery protests forced South African President Jacob Zuma to proclaim the need for ‘radical’ changes at last week’s African National Congress policy conference so as to redress blatant economic injustice – though this appears to be merely career-lengthening rhetoric.
