Hayley Leck completed her degree in Environmental Studies and honours degree in Geography and Environmental Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Royal Holloway University, London, in the Geography Department. Presently, Hayley is in Durban to conduct her fieldwork.
Broadly, her research focuses on opportunities and constraints to adapting to global environmental change (GEC) in the eThekwini and Ugu District municipalities. Specific emphasis is on the human dimensions of adaptation to GEC, while recognising the coupled nature of social and ecological systems. Case studies are selected from across the rural-urban continuum and comprise low, middle and high income communities. The research is conducted through the lens of political ecology and is underpinned by environmental and social justice concerns in relation to vulnerability and adaptation to GEC.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:
Academic Paper: Joint paper written with Supervisor Prof David Simon - presented at the Global Environmental Change and Human Security Conference, Norway, June 2009. Submitted for journal publication and possible book chapter.
