Topic: Zimbabwe's Constitutional referendum is on 16 March, to be followed by a national election in mid-2013. What lies ahead for Zimbabwe's future - short- and medium-term - from the standpoint of civil society, democracy and exiled Zimbabweans? The Great Zimbabwe Scenarios Project is a non-partisan initiative borne of the need to catalyze bold action towards a better future and develop a shared national language. The Scenarios - facilitated by Choice Mharidzo - allow the society to assess opportunities, risks and choices, and involved more than 75 Zimbabweans developing four possible futures for the country. The optimal scenario depends upon resolving the land question, and while recent studies are showing positive and viable outcomes from land reform, more critical questions are still to be answered - the topic of Toendepi Shone's doctoral studies. For millions of Zimbabweans who over the past decade fled political repression and economic chaos, as did China Ngubane, the zigzags of hope and despair continue.
Speakers: Choice Mharidzo holds a Masters degree in Public Administration (Merit) from University of Zimbabwe, where she also studied nursing and theology, and lectured in political science. China Ngubane is a University of South Africa politics student, a local social justice organiser, and coordinator of the Dennis Brutus Community Scholar programme at CCS. Toendepi Shone, who holds a Masters degree in Public and Development Management from Wits University, is director-general of the Movement for Democratic Change and a PhD student at UKZN.
