Centre for Civil Society Seminar - all welcome! Topic: Unitary urbanism, towards maximal difference Speakers: Guillermo Delgado and Phillip Lühl Date: Tuesday 8 January 2013 Time: 12:30-14:00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College
The seminar will deal with attempts to understand and operate within the new ruins of capitalist urbanization aiming not merely to ameliorate or 'repair' the situation, but activating the socio-spatial field as an arena for class struggle. The approach is grounded on critical urban theory, mainly drawing from the work of David Harvey and Henri Lefebvre which put forward 'the urban' as a new paradigm demanding new theories, methodologies, and ways of engaging to gear efforts to the production of maximal difference. The talk will be based on work developed in the context of the Netherlands and Namibia.
Phillip Lühl is lecturer at the Department of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Namibia. Guillermo Delgado is associate researcher at the Labour Resource and Research Institute (LaRRI) in Namibia and doctoral candidate at the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, at the University of Cape Town. They're both part of Cohabitation Strategies, a cooperative for socio-spatial development based in New York: http://www.cohstra.org/CohStra/Home.html
