The heads of state of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will hold their annual summit in Durban in late March, with another 25 heads of African states anticipated as well. The host country's extreme economic, social and environmental contradictions have worsened, and official leftist rhetoric is sometimes a salve (e.g. President Zuma's January 12 speech in Durban named SA's foreign policy anti-imperialist). However, the explicit strategies for global engagement chosen by Pretoria, including recently joining the BRIC alliance (originally mooted by Goldman Sachs bank), have not proven effective in reforming adverse world power relations. The degree to which the BRICS have recently accommodated imperialism – especially in several high-profile matters related to economic and climate crises – suggests that scholars and policy analysts should more forcefully confront the problem of BRICS' subimperial relegitimation of neoliberalism.
