Seminar: Mapping AIDS, from body to city Speaker: Faith ka-Manzi Date: Monday, 11 February 2013 Time: 12:30-14:00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room 601, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College Skypecast option: please email pbond@mail.ngo.za to join
Topic: The scales of the body and the city come together in Faith ka-Manzi's mapping of AIDS, as part of the Durban Antipode studies of the geography of social resistances. Her own route extends from acquiring HIV and grappling with a range of opportunistic infections, to pursuing treatment options and participating in protests against the lack of medicines access. This is an especially important moment to understand geographical barriers to AIDS treatment, given global and provincial cut-backs that have curtailed hospital AIDS plans in the city with the world's highest number of HIV+ residents.
Speaker: Faith ka-Manzi is a scholar/activist/translator based at the UKZN Centre for Civil Society. She was educated at UKZN and was a journalist for several major newspapers. Currently, her articles appear regularly in Africa Report and The Mercury, and include: http://www.iol.co.za/mercury/budget-cuts-could-be-fatal-for-me-1.1461228#.URX5P2eVUuY http://www.theafricareport.com/20120824501817660/columns/faiths-diaries-a-lesson-in-humility.html http://www.theafricareport.com/20130207501822972/columns/overindulgence-or-body-malaise-you-be-the-judge-501822972.html http://www.theafricareport.com/20120824501817660/columns/faiths-diaries-a-lesson-in-humility-501817660.html http://www.theafricareport.com/2012021050181308/columns/faith-diaries-now-hes-dead-and-i-am-having-a-bubble-bath-50181308.html
