BRICS seen from Rio, 13 March 2013

Speaker: Candido Grzybowski
Date: Wednesday, 13 March 2013
Time: 14:00-16:00 (NOTE NEW TIME)
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 601, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College

Topic: The most progressive country within the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa bloc is Brazil. Its long-term challenge to US corporate power and Intellectual Property in the pharmaceuticals sector helped save millions of lives, especially of HIV+ South Africans; the Lula government's doubling of the minimum wage and expansion of the family grant reduced inequality at a time nearly all other countries suffered rising Gini coefficients. Yet contradictions abound, especially in relation to extractive industries (led by Petrobras and Vale) and biofuel promotion, as well as ongoing violence against women, poverty and social movement mobilisation. So the view from the Institute of Brazilian Social and Economic Analysis (IBASE) in Rio de Janeiro is critical to arriving at a balanced judgement regarding Brazil's role in the Durban BRICS summit on 26-27 March.

Speaker: Candido Grzybowski is a philosopher and sociologist who has directed IBASE since 1990. He is also an active member of the organizing committee of the World Social Forum and a member of the its International Secretariat. Grzybowski is former Professor of Sociology of Development at the Fundacao Getulio Vargas, in Rio de Janeiro and holds a doctorate from the University of Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne), France, with post-doctoral studies at the University College London, UK.
