Topic:
The Inkanyezi Community Recyclers focus on poor waste management in Inanda and its impact on poor communities. Their aim is to deal with waste challenges in alternative and innovative ways. Among their initiatives are recycling to reduce waste and waste separation. They run various projects such as Ubuntu Gardens (linked with the Solidarity Economy) which uses recycled waste as compost and to separate seeds – the project aims to eventually keep Inanda rubbish out of Durban's overflowing landfills. Meanwhile, across the world there are various permutations on the idea of Zero Waste, and these are beginning to take route as climate activists and many others in civil society confront the system's unsustainability.
Speaker:
Gcina Makoba is a Centre for Civil Society Community Scholar and eco activist. She works with the Inkanyezi Community Recyclers. Muna Lakhani founded the Institute for Zero Waste in Africa and is an Earthlife Africa member.
