Brazil, the World Cup and BRICS, 10 April TOPIC: Brazilian civil society contests the World Cup, economic injustice and BRICS PRESENTER: Thando Manzi DATE: Thursday, 10 April TIME: 12:30-2pm VENUE: CCS Seminar Room, 6th floor of Memorial Tower Building, UKZN Howard College Campus TOPIC: There are crucial similarities between Brazil and South Africa prior to the June-July World Cup and July Brazil-Russia-India-China-SA Summit. These include the rising rates of protest in recent years, the political elite's malgovernance on behalf of multinational capital - especially Sepp Blatter's FIFA - and the plight and resistance strategies of informal land occupiers. In an election year in which both the ANC and Workers Party are anticipated to win but with extremely strong reservations in civil society, the common critiques and need for alternatives are great. SPEAKER: Thando Manzi, a fourth-year UKZN Geography student and CCS researcher in Cato Manor, has just returned from a ten-day national tour of Brazil where (alongside the National Union of Metalworkers of SA international officer) he spoke at numerous gatherings and collected information on civil society. Manzi's focus is the plight of urban poor people, especially in view of comparative experiences in relation to the World Cup and BRICS.  Back
