The State of the Art in Non-violent Civil Disobedience, 22 July

Date: Tuesday, 22 July 2014
Time: 12:30-2pm
Venue: Room 300 in Memorial Tower Building, UKZN Howard College (NEW VENUE)
Presenter: Matt Meyer

Topic: Non-violent civil disobedience was theorised by Gandhi as Satyagraha in 1906 and implemented in Newcastle on a mass scale in 1913. This led to Gandhi's expulsion from South Africa a century ago. The impact of this legacy and innovations in strategies and tactics can be felt in many struggles for justice across the world.

Presenter: Matt Meyer is a CCS doctoral student and a New York-based educator-activist. He was co-editor of the two volume Africa World Press series Seeds of New Hope. He serves as co-convener of the War Resisters International Africa Working Group and UN NGO representative of the International Peace Research Association.
