Seminar on student protests at UKZN 5 September

Date: Friday, 5 September 2014
Time: 12:30-14:00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th floor, Memorial Tower Building, Howard College
Presenters: Mnikeni Phakathi & Asha Moodley

Topic:
UKZN officials have declared "illegal" the protests at Howard College, Edgewood and Westville campuses this week. What are the reasons behind these protests? What are protester demands? Are they unlawful because they violate a High Court Order protecting the University against protests, disruptive gatherings, demonstrations, mass action, intimidation or any violent act to persons or property at the entrance and premises of UKZN campuses? Is a far-reaching ban on protest good for our university and our democracy, in the event that genuine grievances exist and are not being addressed?

Presenters:
Mnikeni Phakathi is a student from Howard College who is at the forefront of the protests. Asha Moodley represents the Right to Know Campaign.
