Omar Shaukat is a researcher at the Afro-Middle East Centre in Johannesburg. He is currently also a PhD candidate at the University of Virginia in USA. Along with guest lecturing at the University of Johannesburg in the Department of Religion Studies, at AMEC he focuses on the Syrian crisis and Islamist politics. He also maintains interest in social movements in the Muslim world.
