The situation in Palestine, 8 October |
 |

 |
PRESENTER: Diana Buttu DATE: Wednesday, 8 October TIME: 12:30-2pm VENUE: L2, 2nd floor of Memorial Tower Building, UKZN Howard College Campus (note new venue)
TOPIC: The Israeli Defense Force massacres in Gaza a few weeks ago left more than 2000 dead, mostly civilians (fewer than 70 Israelis died, including just 3 civilians). But the historic process of settler colonialism must be understood in its entirety, dating to even before the 1948 ethnic cleaning of 700 000 Palestinians from what is now called Israel. The process of negotiating peace on behalf of Palestinians has been highly compromised, given the imbalance of power, including United States support for Israel. This is the context for renewed internationalist solidarity with Palestine, including the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions strategies and tactics that also helped to defeat South African apartheid. What can be done to change this balance of forces?
SPEAKER: Diana Buttu was born to Palestinian citizens of Israel who moved into exile in Canada. After earning a law degree from Queen's University in Canada and a Masters of Law from Stanford University in the US, Buttu moved to Palestine in 2000. Shortly after her arrival, the second Intifada began and she took a position with the Negotiations Support Unit of the Palestine Liberation Organisation. She was also involved in litigation at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, which resulted in their landmark opinion against Israel’s wall, which cuts through swaths of Palestinian territory in the West Bank, dividing people from their schools, places of employment, and families. She is now based in Ramallah, works with the Institute for Middle East Understanding and is a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Law School.
(This event is co-sponsored with SAMNET, Al-Ansaar, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and several individual donors.)
