The last twenty years of the labour movement provides a hard lesson: those within the ranks of the working class and poor who still seek to undermine the logic of neoliberalism and labour flexibility are in for a long haul. One of the major tasks is identifying the glue that will bind fragmented community struggles. Meanwhile, workers in the platinum sector, commercial agriculture, metals and engineering, the postal service and other sites of recent militancy are beginning to reflect how to build concrete links with potential allies in communities. Real and concrete struggles pose possibilities of reviving old traditions of workers and community control in a new context. Any new politics in South Africa will necessarily place an emphasis on both fronts, namely the point of production (the workplace) and the point of reproduction (the residential spaces).
Speaker:
Mondli Hlatshwayo is a lecturer at the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation, University of Johannesburg, where he received his PhD. He is a former community activist who helped link the Social Movement Indaba membership, and he worked with Numsa on its 'struggle expo' of movement networking early this year. He is co-editor (with Aziz Choudry) of the forthcoming Pluto Press book, Just Work? Migrant Workers, Globalization and Resistance.
