Struggles over conservation space in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park 24 November

Speaker: Melissa Hansen
Date: Monday 24 November, 2014
Time: 12:30-14:00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College, UKZN

Topic:
The re-politicisation of conservation space in the Coastal Forest Reserve Section of the the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (IWP) forces us to consider fraught relationships between land, the environment and political rights. Recent socio-ecological conflicts in the IWP include mobilisations against state-driven enclosure and the contested implementation of market mechanisms for the conservation of ecological World Heritage. This is particularly problematic in a context where there is structural inequality with historical roots. Theoretically, intellectual work by Henri Lefebvre (author of The Production of Space) is useful for understanding such protected areas as geographical phenomena.

Speaker:
Melissa Hansen is an incoming Centre for Civil Society post-doctoral researcher, with recent lecturing experience at UKZN Human Geography and a PhD in Sustainability Science from Lund University, Sweden.
