International Women’s Day at the UKZN Centre for Civil Society: Resistance to Resource Cursing in KZN, the Eastern Cape and the DRC

Women are increasingly disgruntled about extractive industries which wreak havoc in communities, countries and the African continent. Extractive industries harm women’s livelihoods as mothers, wives, girlchildren, wood and water gatherers, home chefs, caregivers etc. These industries destroy the land on which food is produced, the surface water and underground aquifers, the grazing land used by animals, the air that becomes polluted with toxins, and climate stability. To honour International Women’s Day this year, women will meet at CCS from affected communities from Fuleni in rural northern KZN to Xolobeni in the Eastern Cape to sisters who are refugees from the eastern DRC. The need to democratise each of the three case-study sites is urgent, often as a first step to reversing their Resource Curses. In South Africa, that includes work done by Right2Know so that civil and political rights are ensured, and so that the winners and losers of resource flows from extraction are fully understood. The day-long deliberations include shared forms of analysis, programmes of action in these three areas (and others), solidarity strategies and empowerment tactics.
