The state of social activism against xenophobia, human rights violations and mining exploitation -three case sites

Xenophobia continues and the closure of the Chatsworth Refugee Camp - with 100 victims still homeless - reminds of how much more durable activism must become, especially in light of the incident mapping that Ngubane has carried out. The state of human rights organising in the Durban area has ebbed and flowed, with questions continually arising about whether social movements, community organisations, trade unions, environmentalists, sympathetic academics and other groups are working in sync. The particular case of a proposed titanium mine three hours south of Durban, in Xolobeni, recently resulted in violence by pro-mining elements and a higher profile for anti-extraction activists partly due to the international success of the film The Shore Break, which stars Mbuthuma. We can learn lessons about analysis, advocacy narratives, strategies and tactics through these cases.
