Belonging, inclusion and South African civil society in the campaigns against AIDS and xenophobia, 29 July

Speaker: Ryan Solomon
Date: Wednesday, 29 July 2015
Time: 12:30-14:00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College, University of KwaZulu-Natal

Topic:
There are complex meanings of 'belonging' in South Africa. The introduction of democracy provided many challenges, with the HIV crisis in particular showing how difficult it can be to escape the legacy of Apartheid. Different communities struggle to manage different identities crafted by Apartheid legislation. The wave of xenophobic violence that has swept over South Africa also created new spaces of belonging in South Africa.

Speaker:
Ryan Solomon is an Assistant Professor at Colgate University in New York, and holds law and social science degrees from the University of South Africa, University of Free State, Brigham Young University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
