Topic:
Pan Africanism has long been claimed across the African Continent and the Diaspora. The challenge of this African Century is to find and live practical Pan Africanism, at a time xenophobia has thrown into question the political ideology of many poor and working people. The Institute of Afrikokology was set up as a response to the following challenges:
The prevailing miseducation about African history
The decline in appreciation for traditional values, rituals and symbolism (African indigenous knowledge systems)
The popularisation of terms such as ‘Ubuntu’ and ‘African Renaissance’, and the failure to provide appropriate definitions and practical values linked to these terms
The need to develop international studies that explore the world from an African-centered perspective.
Speaker:
Yaa Ashantewaa Ngidi is Director of the Institute of Afrikology (which she co-founded with Dani Nabudere in 2000) and Chairperson of Africa Day Foundation. She was recently recognsised by the City of Durban for providing reconciliation and support to foreigners in the Isipingo region.
