India in Turmoil, 23 March Speaker: Hafsa Kanjwal Date: Wednesday 23 March 2016 Time: 12:30-14:00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College, University of KwaZulu-Natal Topic: Waves of student protests in Delhi and throughout India reflect a worsening political climate. The right-wing BJP government has attempted to squash dissent by aggressively promoting an Indian nationalist Hindutva ideology. The row over the state's recent arrest of student leadership at Jawaharlal Nehru University also highlights fissures in the Indian left, especially involving those who have aligned themselves within the nationalist tradition. This fissure has come to the forefront most especially on the issue of Kashmir, which has become a blind spot in those Indian progressive circles where scholars and activists may speak of freedom of expression and democracy within India - but are unable to extend their solidarities to those who seek freedom from India. Speaker: Hafsa Kanjwal is a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, specialising in Modern South Asian history with an emphasis on Islam and gender.
