From Trump to BRICS, where is civil society headed? |
|
|
Date: Friday 18 November Time: 12:30-14:00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room, 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College Speaker: Patrick Bond Topic: The election of Donald Trump and the realignment of several BRICS countries (Brazil, India and Russia) towards the United States means international civil society analysis, strategies, tactics and allies are in flux. In contrast to an unsuccessful BRICS heads-of-state summit in Goa in which the host country attempted to break other BRICS’ ties to Pakistan, the BRICS People’s Forum was successful in carrying through the resistance spirit of Durban in 2013 and Fortaleza in 2014. The moment for tighter international solidarity to address both imperial and sub-imperial politics – in climate policy, international finance and trade especially – is nearing. Earth-shattering events beginning on January 20 2017 will help to define whether the forthcoming widespread US human rights violations can be contested with global justice as a unifying theme. Speaker Bio: Patrick Bond is honorary professor at the UKZN Centre for Civil Society and professor of political economy at Wits University in Johannesburg. His latest book is co-edited (with Brazilian scholar Ana Garcia): BRICS: An Anti-capitalist Critique (2015, Jacana Media).
