In this seminar, I explore how the different critical planning approaches look at social transformation, and how they perceive the role of conflict in this transformation. Each of the perspectives has its own distinctive ideas on how ‘conflict’ should be defined, as such perceiving different roles for conflict in transforming the social order. Apart from the widely acknowledged communicative and agonistic planning approach, I would like to argue that a third important approach remains largely underexposed, that is the disruptive planning approach. By using examples of three cases of land use conflicts in Belgium, I would like to show where both communicative and agonistic planning approaches fall short when analysing the transformative potential of planning conflicts, and how the disruptive approach could be further elaborated.

Elisabet Van Wymeersch is a PhD candidate at the Research group for Urban Development at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), and a current visiting scholar at CCS.
