Centre for Civil Society Seminar (CCS): The use of interactive maps and scatter graphs to study protest in the BRICS countries

Speaker: John Devenish
Date: Thursday 13 April 2017
Time: 13:00-14:00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room A726, Level 7, Shepstone, Howard College, UKZN

Topic:
When analyzing a social phenomenon such as protests, there are many factors that affect the occurrence and nature of protests. It is often difficult to determine the relationship between them. While the use of traditional graphics such as maps, graphs and tables are helpful they have their limitations. This seminar will explore the use Java Script and the HTML Canvas element to produce interactive graphics. Such graphics can be embedded in a website or a standalone document.

The seminar will focus on the BRICS protest and will include a discussion on how these techniques can be applied to other areas of research.

Speaker Bio:
John Devenish set up and formerly managed the CCS Social Protest Observatory and is currently managing the BRICS protest mapping project: BRICS
