CCS Seminar: The Peoples Economic Forum Responds to the World Economic Forum Speaker(s): Bandile Mdlalose, Daniel Dunia and Nisha Naidoo Date: Thursday 1 June 2017 Time: 13h00-14h00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room A726, Level 7, Shepstone, Howard College, UKZN
Topic: The People’s Economic Forum held from April 27 to May 3 2017, ahead of the World Economic Forum Africa in Durban (May 3 to 5) aimed to make the worlds of business, finance and economics easier to understand in a “festival of learning” - “It is where people can ask questions about how world economics affects them”. Currently, terms such as junk status and radical economic transformation are common parlance, but not many of us understand how it affects us, and why we should be concerned. Questions posed by the forum included whether the world’s problems are best left to be solved by the world’s most elite? The forum took place in various venues in the city and comprised local and international speakers, workshops, films and creative activism. Centre for Civil Society community scholars and activists report back on experiences at the forum.
Speaker Bio (s): Bandile Mdlalose is former General Secretary of Abahlali baseMjondolo and leader of the Community Justice Movement. Daniel Dunia is the Secretary General of Africa Solidarity Network. Both speakers are community scholars at the Centre for Civil Society. Nisha Naidoo is co-convener and co-organiser of The People's Economic Forum.
