CCS and International Relations, School of Social Sciences Seminar: Hearing Africa Speak Again - Amilcar Cabral’s Seven Theses on the African Predicament Today |
 |

Speaker: Professor Siphamandla Zondi Date: Tuesday 27 March 2018 Time: 13h00-14h00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room A726, Level 7, Shepstone, Howard College, UKZN
Topic: The question of the state of Africa or individual African countries like South Africa is a subject for much debate. This is couched in terms of governance transitions, post-conflict constipations, social crises, failure of democracy or mal-development. Because the vast amount of work on these borrows from Eurocentric assumptions about the state, power, development, and being, it arises that the African predicament is misdiagnosed and mistreated. This seminar argues for a step back in order to listen again to long ignored profound African voices for analyses that are closer to the reality of our times. It proposes that Amilcar Cabral is one of such African radical thinkers worth listening to as we think about South Africa and Africa today and tomorrow.
Speaker: Professor Siphamandla Zondi is head of Department of Political Sciences and acting head of the Institute for Strategic and Political Affairs at the University of Pretoria. He works on African Political thought and agency, radical global south agency and international relations.
