In this seminar, Thobani Zikalala invokes Steve Bantu Biko’s philosophy of Black Consciousness to extend his understanding of current debates on land expropriation. He argues that while African thinkers like Biko are often misunderstood and sometimes side-lined in agrarian studies, their writings form an important basis and ideological foundation in which current demands for land expropriation are anchored. The application of Biko’s ideas of black consciousness on the South African land question, permits us to confront the following difficult yet liberating questions: What attitudes must we take in order to finally return the land of our people? What does Black Consciousness say about the different intersections of Black people as we struggle to return land that is rightfully ours? What does being Black first mean in the context of land expropriation?
Speaker Bio
Thobani Zikalala was born in KwaDukuza born and raised in Durban. He is currently reading for a BA in Political Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College and has a history of activism spanning a decade. He has travelled a long road in the ideological stream born and raised in the Congress Movement. He describes himself as lover of knowledge and a soldier of Black Liberation. His interest lies in solving the Black existential crisis where Black people will exist not as objects of White Supremacy but as full citizens able to determine their own destiny. He describes himself as a Black Consciousness and Pan Africanist adherent and a student of the Azanian revolution. He is a member of UKZN Howard College SRC as an Academic and Transformation and member of the Radical BC movement, Black First Land First where he currently serves as KZN Provincial Spokesperson.
