CCS Seminar: The ‘#Data Must Fall’ Campaign

Topic

The seminar will examine data and communication as a basic human right and will focus on the Right2Know ‘#Data Must Fall’ campaign, its context, tactics and outcomes. The seminar will consider the laws governing access to information in South Africa and the regulations around the privatization of the internet. The discussion will also centre on the current high cost of data in South Africa and various securitisation laws such as RICA.

Speaker Bios:

Philisiwe Mazibuko is a community activist affiliated to the Right2Know campaign and the South Durban Peace Builders campaign. She is also a community scholar at the Centre for Civil Society where she is advancing her work related to access to information and media freedom. Philisiwe can be found participating in community struggles via her involvement with the United Front in KwaZulu-Natal and through various other civic society formations.

Percy Nhau is an activist originally from Zimbabwe. He has been involved in advocating for issues around migrant rights and social cohesion. He is a member of the Africa Solidarity Network as well as the Zimbabwe Migrants Forum. Percy is also affiliated to the Right2Know campaign where he served as Provincial Access to Information Convener.
