CCS Seminar: A 5 Year Review of South Africa’s National Development Plan and its Developmental State Ambition Speaker: Isaac Khambule Date: Wednesday 29 May 2019 Time: 13:00-14:00 Venue: CCS Seminar Room A726, Level 7, Shepstone, Howard College, UKZN Topic: In 2017, South Africa marked the first five years since the adoption of the country’s National Development Plan (NDP). Chapter 13 of the South African National Development Plan outlines the country’s capable developmental state ambitions as being driven by the need to address historical socio-economic injustices and to reduce the ongoing triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. The NDP identified three priority areas - parliamentary oversight, accountability in state-owned enterprises and the performance of local government - that need improvement to materialise a capable developmental state. This seminar interrogates whether South Africa is on track to reach this goal by reviewing parliamentary oversight, accountability in state-owned enterprises and the ability of local government to deliver basic services over the first 6 years of the NDP (2012-2018). Speaker Bio: Isaac Khambule is a Lecturer in Development Studies, School of Built Environment and Development Studies. He is interested in the political economy of institutions, regional and local economic development, BRICS and developmental states.  Back
