The Role of Civil Society Lecture in Post-Apartheid

The local History Museums in the Libraries and Heritage department within EThekwini Municipality is planning to host the Civil Society Lecture on the 17 May 2013.

The focus of this Lecture/dialogue is to clarify the role of civil society organizations within the public space. It’s vital for the public to understand that Civil Societies are not about causing tension between the state and organizations but It’s about making the state more accountable, responsive, inclusive, and effective, hence more legitimate. The Civil Societies cannot function without the active support and participation of civil public.
And the most of all to encourage our communities to volunteer their services and partake in the social transformation of our society which is so desperately in need of strong values which the government cannot do alone. It is also vital for the schools to enlighten and empower communities about social responsibilities in their own spaces for the development of a healthy society with values.

Seemingly there is confusion between the role of Civil Society with that of Trade unions or political organizations. And we have also witness disruptive trend where public seems to engage on destructive protest which end up destroying their own resources and violating other people’s rights. The violent behavior between the public simply means that there is a lack of direction or education within our communities with regards to peaceful protests especially in the post-apartheid era.

The local History Museums endeavor to instill the culture of Museums as platforms for interrogating healthy discussions and promoting interaction with the public.
This lecture will target a diverse audience consisting of workers, workers’ colleges, unions, representative council of learners, scholars, educators, political organizations and public.

On behalf of Local History Section I would like to invite 4 representatives from your organization to join this Lecture.

The formal invitation will be sent in due course which will indicate our expectations as well as program of the day in order to facilitate our discussion.
