It will be a socialist revolution that will be led by all the progressive working class forces.” - Floyd Shivambu The 20th anniversary of freedom on 27 April and the May 7 national election require from us a much more rigorous balance sheet of gains and defeats, and assessment of strategic options, than we have had to date. The recent arrival of two critical left-wing narratives - from the National Union of Metalworkers of SA and the Economic Freedom Fighters - gives the society much more to think about. Can a left political party now make a breakthrough; should progressives vote No with a spoiled ballot; is a United Front of civil society the most appropriate vehicle at present; what role for Marxist critique and the socialist vision; and are our society's other pathologies - e.g. patriarchy, homophobia, racism and xenophobia, eco-destruction, generational injustices, internecine violence - being adequately confronted?
