The World Social Science Forum - critical of hide-bound disciplines and open to global-local transformation - comes to Durban, 13-16 September. Several of the city’s critical thinkers/activists are introducing local controversies to visiting allies, so join us at Ike’s for free thinking, radical analysis and vigorous Durban debating (refreshments available).

• Mahatma Gandhi as racist stretcher-bearer of British Empire
• Dangers of Durban aspiring to be Africa’s sports tourism mecca

• Durban’s xenophobic episode of 2015
• South Durban's struggle to survive
• The uses and abuses of scholar activism

Patrick Bond and Boaventura Monjane, 3:30-4:15

• Climate change versus Durban’s shipping and petrochemical fantasies
• BRICS seen from sub-imperialist South Africa and peripheral Mozambique
Ike’s Books and Collectables has won the best Independent Bookshop award for 2015. This award is not only in recognition for the historical role that Ike’s has played in providing a space for discussion and affordable books but for its contemporary role in hosting book launches, critical discussions and an impressive and growing array of books that range from political economy to gardening and fiction.
