This initiative aims to build platforms for young people to voice their concerns about pressing social, political and environmental matters. It also aims to provide spaces for young people to engage with and promote social justice in their contexts.
The object of this platform is to discuss the challenges faced by youth in South Africa in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaker Bios:
Nombulelo Shange:
Nombulelo Shange is a Sociology Lecturer at the University of the Free State, she is also currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Anthropology at UFS. Nombulelo also has experience working with issues around social and ecological justice, from her time working for NGO groundWork, and Friends of the Earth SA. In 2019 she took the lead in curriculum design and created a new course on Social Movements. The course is innovative in content and addresses many of the decolonial challenges Fees Must Fall students called for.
Mathew A Varghese:
Mathew A Varghese is an Assistant Professor at the School of International Relations and Politics (SIRP) at Mahatma Gandhi University. With a Ph.D. from the University of Bergen and a postdoc from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. For his postdoc, he was part of a team that enquired into the deployment of ecological infrastructure in the Durban region. He has edited the book Urban Utopias: Excess and Expulsion in Neoliberal South Asia (jointly with Tereza Kuldova), published by Palgrave Macmillan.
Sphelele Ngubane:
Sphelele Ngubane is a PhD student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's School of Education. His research focuses on people living in the peripheries of modern society, constrained by sociopolitical and socioeconomic structures.
Ngubane is a Chevening scholar and holds an MA in journalism, media and communication from Cardiff University, UK. He has worked as a journalist for Independent Newspapers, writing for The Mercury. He has taught journalism and currently teaches English and Communication at the Durban University of Technology.
Ndumiso Mbuthuma:
Ndumiso Mbuthuma is currently completing his Master’s degree in Development Studies at the School Built Environment and Development Studies. The key focus areas in his studies are agricultural development for small-scale farmers, food systems & value chain. He has worked as a field research assistant for projects such as SANIPATH and urine diversion toilet (UDT) project run by Pollution Research Group (PRG) and is also a Research Assistant for the Centre for Environment, Governance & Climate Change.
