Topic Extractive resource nationalization—seizing operations for the state—is a gamble: its immediate windfalls can fortify the foundations of enduring rule, or its operational costs can risk future prosperity and political survival. In this webinar, Mahdavi advances a novel theory of nationalization based on his new book, Power Grab (Cambridge University Press, 2020), and describes the conditioning role of state-owned enterprises in political theories of the “resource curse.” The webinar will also discuss how we can apply lessons from oil nationalization to the politics of extractives needed for the clean energy transition. Speaker Bio Paasha Mahdavi is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Affiliated Professor of Environmental Science & Management, and Director of the Energy Governance and Political Economy (EGAPE) lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the impact of oil and gas resources on governance and environmental politics. It is driven by core questions about the role of government in industry and the design of firm strategies and government policies that will mitigate rather than exacerbate climate change. Mahdavi has held fellowships at the Hoover Institution, the Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy at Johns Hopkins SAIS, the Payne Institute at the Colorado School of Mines, the World Economic Forum, and as a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations.
