In this webinar, Madoda Cuphe discusses how the AIDC’s Building Counter Power programme responds to corporate dominance in every aspect of global society. Madoda will then explain why AIDC sees building counter power to corporate hegemony is important in building communities and reducing inequality. He will also talk about some of the social movements who through their community struggles and campaigns against corporate exploitation have joined forces with AIDC to form a formidable “counter power” agenda. The webinar further explains why in neutralising corporate domination it is important to build a national movement rooted in communities.
Speaker Bio:
Madoda Cuphe is responsible for the Building Counter Power Programme at AIDC. He cut his teeth in the student and community struggles in the 1980s’. He is the founder member of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and the Cape Youth Congress (CAYCO) in the township of Langa, Cape Town. He was also active in the structures of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Cape Flats. He has experience in working for the Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and State Own Entities (SOE).

This two-part Special Webinar Series on Dismantling and Countering Corporate Power focuses on Alternative Information and Development Centre’s (AIDC) campaigns in dismantling and countering corporate power in South Africa and beyond. As big corporation gain immense control over Africa’s resources and people’s lives, the AIDC has initiated the following campaigns of “Dismantling Corporate Power” and “Building Counter Power” to bring organisations, affected communities and movements together to confront and break down corporate hegemonic systems which destroy their livelihoods, homes and health, and violate their basic rights.
