One year ago today on September 18, 2007, a quiet Tuesday night was disrupted by an explosion at Island View Storage, a chemical storage facility in Durban’s Bluff suburb. A loud blast rocked houses and startled local residents as several tanks storing toxic chemicals exploded simultaneously. In the hours that followed, the unfortunate people in the surrounding area watched the fire with fear for their health and homes and were victimized further by the mismanagement of the emergency response and the lack of information. The city seemed to view their response to this incident as a victory and did not see the need to ask the hard questions to IVS about WHAT happened, WHY it happen, and HOW it can be prevented in the future. One year later we can’t help but wonder: What have we really learned?
