The Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme PDP is designed to afford photojournalists and documentary makers from South Africa and the region the opportunity to benefit from a quality home-based yet internationally recognized learning Programme in photojournalism and documentary photography at the Market Photo Workshop, in Johannesburg.
The Programme has been able to provide needed skills which, due to high costs and lack of awareness, are currently inaccessible to many of those who need them.
The Programme’s over-arching vision is to equip South Africans, together with participants from Africa, with the skills to tell their own stories and hence act as interpreters of their culture. Its aim is to develop photojournalism and documentary photography to a level where it buttresses democracy and freedom of expression. The intention is not merely to create photographers, but critical thinkers and social commentators through which the general public can be informed.
The programme also develops grassroots photojournalists that can identify and integrate issues of grassroots communities in their work, thereby impacting on media coverage, enhancing community knowledge of relevant issues and strengthen the role of media in grassroots communities.
