Summary |
 |
The World Bank is launching its World Development Report (WDR) a little earlier than usual this year to be in time for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The theme of this year¡¦s WDR (i.e. WDR 2003) is ¡¥Sustainable Development in a Dynamic Economy.¡¦
According to the UN in a background paper for the WSSD, sustainable development needs integration of action in three key areas:
„h economic growth and equity; „h conserving natural resources and the environment; and „h social development.
The environmental sustainability of the policies of the World Bank have been well criticised by other organisations and will not be considered here. This paper investigates the impact of World Bank policies on economic and social sustainability. In doing so we will address the World Bank policies behind the facade of WDR 2003.
