Ten UKZN postgraduate students made up a Centre for Civil Society team that conducted exit poll surveys in Cato Manor on Election Day 2019. The surveys form part of a national survey led by the Centre for Social Change at the University of Johannesburg.

The surveys included both quantitative and qualitative elements using PDA devices and interview schedules. The questions posed to voters leaving the polling station included their voting experiences, their political participation in terms of protest action as well as voting, their aspirations and their views on the state of democracy in South Africa.
