GBV & Femicide

Violence against women is endemic in most societies around the world and South Africa is no exception. Sexual harassment is an expression of violence against women and is rife in most institutions such as homes, religious institutions, the workplace and organisations in civil society. It is indicative of the unequal power relations between men and women in a patriarchal system.  Sexual harassment within workplaces and in organisations is a substantial problem for both men and women although most victims are women.  Studies have shown that 77% of working women have been victims of sexual harassment and abuse. Also, women who challenge men for social, economic, or organisational power are at higher risk of sexual harassment.

Against this background, R2K (Right to Know Campaign), TAC (Treatment Action Campaign) working with student leaders at UKZN are hosting an awareness campaign centred on GBV and femicide.
